Vmware converter : does disabling ssl make your vm transfer faster?

Posted on 1:10 AM by Unknown

    P2v conversion are painful.
Sometimes for large systems the estimated time is DAYS. And it isnt kidding….

Found this by patanassov : http://communities.vmware.com/thread/333786?start=0&tstart=0
He wrote that by turning off ssl it will be much faster.
I didn’t even know that was an option before.  s.

    Lets do a conversion test.
VM is 37.5 GB C drive, with 8.75 used.
    Converting to thick .

    Conversion 1: Standard SSL enabled

    Converter-worker Before edit

    Converter -worker after

Reboot after converter worker change. Then start:
Conversion 2: same as above but with SSL disabled.

Wait what? It took LONGER than last time…
    Weird.

The only thing that is different is thatI had to uncheck  : "Remove restore checkpoints"
I was getting :  Submit job failed: The specified parameter was not correct: 'spec.synchronizeImmediately'.

I removed the edit on the converter file and trying again.. After a reboot.

    Convert3: with SSL enabled
This time I did NOT get this error : Submit job failed: The specified parameter was not correct: 'spec.synchronizeImmediately'.

Its no where near done but its flying again, this is with UseSLL  being TRUE.

So Im going to change SSL to false again and try the same thing after reboot

Conversion 4: same as above but with SSL disabled.

This time I did NOT get this error  so that’s good: Submit job failed: The specified parameter was not correct: 'spec.synchronizeImmediately'.

This time it was MUCH faster. Both from the previous UseSSL=True and the failed for whatever reason usessl=false.

Best times: UseSSL is True  9 minutes in 19.63MB/s
Best times: UseSSL is False 7 minutes in 27.43MB/s   almost 40% faster!

Verdict:  Turn of SSL for faster conversions

    Tips:
If your conversion is going slower than it should, and if its slower without ssl than it is with ssl, reboot and try again.

How to turn off SSL
Go to  %ALLUSERSPROFILE%\VMware\VMware vCenter Converter Standalone
Edit: converter-worker.xml
Find: <usessl>true</usessl> and change true to false.
Reboot.

Pattanssov said you can also find it here on older systems.:::
%ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Application Data\VMware\VMware vCenter Converter Standalone
