Growing and Expanding a VMFS

Have you ever needed to expand a vmfs? You can even have a running vm while doing it.
** prereq: If you can grow the lun on your storage, or you under allocated the VMFS then you can easily add more space.















So I have this VMFS, named ExpansionTestDrive.
Current size: It is 90GB.
Desired effect: want 100GB






Test Guest:  You can see that the guest is on the VMFS ExpansionTestDrive and its running











Im running pings to see if any drop while doing the expansion











Time to expand


Under configuration -> Storage of your esxi host









You see recsan all?
Do that.









Click ok. It might take a while.


You should see the LUN that is associated with the VMFSstore.
High light it.  Then click properties. See 2 pics above.


Now you should get this next box.









You should see the button INCREASE. Click that






Select the lun associated with your VMFS datastore.
Then next







  

















Ok ready to expand
Click finsih







Capacity changed to 100gb while pings kept going.
