Performance difference
"The performance should be about the same, the reason for the change is that Intel is not longer supporting the e1000 and the driver does not exist by default in Win8 and Server2012, the e1000e is supported and the driver is included with Win8 and Server2012" -Linjo

When is E1000e available as a selectable option
" E1000E is only available to attach to a VM if it is running HW8 and the guest operating system is Windows 8. For all other modern Guest Operating Systems the default is still E1000." -rickardnobel

Vmxnet3 vs e1000 or e1000e*
"VMXNET3 has less CPU overhead compared to e1000 or e1000e. VMXNET3 is more stable than e1000 or e1000e "
*note: the reason to use e1000 or e1000e is really compatibility purposes, otherwise its always suggested to stick with the vmxnet3 adaptors.
